Tunnel boring technology has opened the way for construction of longer tunnels, as well as tunnels under highly populated areas. These big machines have automated the process of tunneling, making expansive tunneling projects more feasible and more cost-effective. They also produce tremendous amounts of discharge, including the clay or bentonite slurries used to shield the giant drill cutter heads as they run, particularly when boring in soft ground with very high water pressure and large amounts of ground water.

Dober’s Water Treatment portfolio of natural chemistry solutions, including coagulants and flocculants, can be extremely effective in separating the clay or bentonite out of the slurry after it’s been used, as well as for removing silt and other particulates from the large volumes of discharge water that may be pumped from the excavation chamber during the tunneling process.
